Afghan Massacre Plea Hearing Set For Thursday

The US Army soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers during nighttime raids last year will be arraigned on Thursday, military officials have said.
Staff Sergeant Robert Bales could face the death penalty if convicted on several charges, including premeditated murder, in the March 11 massacre.
He is accused of killing 16 people – including nine children – in two villages in southern Afghanistan while based nearby.
Prosecutors say Bales left his remote base, attacked one village and returned to the base before slipping away again to attack another nearby compound.
Bales is being held at a military base in Washington state.
Following a November pre-trial hearing Bales was ordered to stand trial in a military court martial to be held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
